What is Reiki?
How Reiki Works To understand how Reiki works as a healing technique, it is important to understand how energy relates to our well-being and creates or extricates dis-ease. As discussed previously, Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy. It is an energy of the highest vibration, and higher vibrations always raise lower vibrations. Our existence is one of many layers of energy. Much of the time people visually perceive only the physical body without realizing that we also consist of an emotional, mental and spiritual body. We live in each of these bodies at different times through out the day, as well as project energy outward and inward with our thoughts. Each thought that we have is a form of energy that carries a vibration, and will manifest in some way or another. When one concentrates on negative thoughts constantly, they attract negativity into their life, and vice-versa for positive thoughts. But, our thought forms do not only manifest in our outer world, they also manifest in our inner world. Lower vibrational thoughts manifest in the physical body, for the outer is a reflection of the inner at all times. In the physical body they create tissue blockages, where your Ki or life force energy does not flow properly. When the life force energy is not flowing properly the area of blockage is then termed as an area of dis-ease and we experience discomfort or pain. Reiki helps by distributing a higher vibrational energy into those disturbed areas, assisting in the healing of that tissue, as well as the thought forms that created the blockage in the first place. Here we understand that dis-ease is not only a physical phenomenon, it goes much deeper, and to completely heal it, you must heal the depth of it. If you continuously focus on only one aspect of the dis-ease, it may be masked or disappear in one part of the body, only to re-manifest in another way later because the emotional, mental and spiritual bodies still require attention. Energy Flow Energy moves through our various bodies in different ways. It flows into us through the air we breath, through the food we eat, through the thoughts that we allow. Throughout our bodies are concentrated energy centers called chakras. The word chakra is of Sanskrit origin and means "wheel", for chakras look like color wheels spinning at different speeds. There are seven chakras, and each has its own characteristics. Each chakra reflects a specific color and a particular part of our physical, emotional, or mental bodies. For example, your root chakra is centered at the base of your spine, it is red in color, and functions as the energy area concerned with survival, stability and instincts (to name just a few). It also relates to certain organs such as your spinal column or your kidneys. Whenever we focus on a fear based thought (lower vibrational thought) concerning the functions of the root chakra (fear of financial stability, for example), we create an energy blockage in that chakra and it will manifest in the organs that it relates to if we give too much power to those fear based thoughts. Reiki helps heal and release the lower vibrations that become embedded within the tissue where dis-ease may be manifesting relating to each chakra. A Reiki treatment is given by a certified Reiki practitioner, one who has received at least the first Reiki initiation and/or the second initiation. The first initiation enables the practitioner to aid in healing of the physical body only, and the second enables the practitioner to aid in healing the emotional, spiritual, mental bodies as well as healing at a distance. Distance healing is sending Reiki to an individual the practitioner is not in physical contact with. They could be across the room or across the country, for you do not need to be next to someone to give life force energy. The second level initiate has received the symbols that have been passed down their lineage for this deeper level of healing. A third level initiate is termed a Reiki Master. They not only give Reiki to others, but they themselves can give to others the ability to use Reiki through initiations called attunements. At this stage they are both teachers and practitioners. Only a Reiki Master can give such initiations to a student for they receive symbols for this purpose. A Reiki treatment is not an attunement, it is simply the administering of the healing energy, whereas an attunement is the actual initiation into being a Reiki practitioner. Reiki is given through the practitioner's hands. You remain clothed during a Reiki treatment, and receive it lying down, generally on a massage table. It is important to discuss with your practitioner any types of dis-ease or discomfort you may be experiencing prior to the treatment so they are aware of any special attention they might want to give throughout the treatment. The practitioner will then proceed to initiate the energy through simple intent, and will work with different hand positions over each chakra area from your head to your feet. The practitioner may also be guided to work in different areas of the body throughout the treatment, everyone has different needs. Many times a practitioner will receive guidance for the patient throughout the treatment by means of clairvoyance, clairaudience or clairsentience. One who is clairvoyant receives information from spirit in a visual way; Clairaudience means they receive info through an audible manner; Clairsentience means they receive information through feeling things in their emotions, or their senses, for ex. The information that comes through will be given to you to aid you in your healing journey, perhaps it may help you recognize a belief system or a fear you might have that is causing you to feel the discomfort or the dis-ease. Reiki is Universal In our spiritual journeys, it is important to discern what types of healing modalities we choose to use. Reiki is a healing technique that can be used by anyone and is non-denominational. It is NOT a religion, and relates to many cultures that study the body and how it relates to energy and dis-ease. In China, life force energy is called "Qi", in India it can be termed as "Prana." It is even documented that the Essenes, who were the Nazareans, of which Jesus was a part of culturally (Jesus the Nazarean), practiced hands-on-healing techniques. You might even notice in your research of Reiki, that there are different types of Reiki being used throughout the west. There is Karuna Reiki, Seichim Reiki, and many, many more. What is important to note, is that all life force energy is simply that, life force energy, and it is how we use it, perceive it or name it that makes it different. Listen to your heart and go with what feels right to you. For in your heart lies your truth.
